Read this before you set off, not on the lane

Two verified facts about this address change how you drive the last half hour. Ten minutes of prep removes the single most avoidable stress of the trip.

The postcode is 780 m wrong

sits 780 m due north of the postcode centre. A sat-nav set to will confidently stop you in Eryrys village, half a mile south of the driveway, having driven straight past the turning. The what3words square actually falls in postcode .

Worse: "Pant Du Road" returns zero results from OpenStreetMap and Nominatim. It is a local postal name, not a mapped or signposted road. Do not expect a road sign.

Do this before you set off: save straight into Google Maps as a favourite. Coordinates work with no signal and no app. Install what3words as the backup, not the primary. Download offline maps for the CH7 area — signal in these hills is patchy.

The route to actually use

  • Leave the A55 at J33 Northop, follow the A494 signed Mold.
  • Stay on the A494 Mold bypass right round the town. Do not drop into Mold centre on the B5444.
  • Continue ~3 miles signed Ruthin. About 1.2 miles before Loggerheads, turn LEFT onto Ffordd Maeshafn.
  • 1.74 miles through Maeshafn village. At the T-junction, turn RIGHT. Cottage is 0.36 miles on the left.
  • J33 → door: 10.5 miles, 18–22 min. Mold → door: 4.4 miles, 12–15 min.

The lane, honestly

  • Ffordd Maeshafn is tagged national speed limit with no markings — in practice a wide single track with informal passing places, hedged, walled, blind bends. Expect to reverse at least once.
  • It is not a mountain track: Maeshafn is a real village whose residents drive it daily. The final 0.36 miles is narrower.
  • Climb is steady: A494 246 m → Maeshafn 294 m → cottage 331 m (Mold sits at 113 m).
  • The route sat-nav picks instead — B5444 then 2.7 miles of unnamed hill lane — is narrower, steeper and less used. Take the Maeshafn way on a first arrival.

Stop in Mold on the way in

  • There is no shop in Eryrys. An unplanned milk run is a 30-minute round trip. Arrive with the fridge already full.
  • Hit Mold about 13:45–14:30: Aldi (King St, ) or Lidl (Denbigh Rd) for the big shop; Home Bargains (Chester Rd, ) for nappies, wipes, buckets and spades — and a £10 clothes airer, which is cheaper than one launderette load.
  • Get £15 in £1 coins as change here. Six car parks this week are coins-only and give none.
  • Fill up at Tesco Mold () — no fuel in Eryrys, Maeshafn or Llanarmon.

Friday's tide at Talacre — and the window that matters

Friday has the smallest tidal range of the week (4.0 m, down from 7.6 m on Tuesday), so the water travels less and comes in more slowly. Arrive as it bottoms out and you get miles of firm sand with the lighthouse walkable — then leave before it pushes back in.

Why Friday is the beach day, twice over

  • Weather: zero measurable rain at Talacre 09:00–18:00, and the wind is SW — which is offshore on a north-facing beach. Flat sea, far more sheltered than the raw 31 mph gust figure suggests.
  • Tide: Friday has the smallest tidal range of the week. It is the safest Talacre day of your stay.
  • Low water Friday: 10:07. Firm sand and a walkable lighthouse from roughly 08:30 to 13:00. High water 15:59.
  • Sea is 17 °C — paddling and sandcastles, not swimming.

Daylight, and the real cut-off

  • Sunset moves 19:31 → 19:21 across the week; last usable light about 19:55.
  • But under 94–100% cloud on Wed and Fri it feels dark nearer 19:15. With a two-year-old, plan to be walking back to the car by 18:15.
  • The lanes up to Eryrys are narrow and unlit. Anything after 19:15 means driving them in near-dark.
  • Practical window 09:30–18:00 · nap 12:30–14:30 sits right in the middle of it

Pack for 10 °C, not 17 °C

  • Wind, not rain, is what ends outdoor time with a toddler. Feels-like maximum at the cottage is 9.8–11.5 °C on Wed, Thu and Fri.
  • Non-negotiable: all-in-one puddle suits for both girls, wellies, and a buggy rain cover plus a blanket — a stationary toddler chills far faster than a walking adult.
  • Adults need hooded waterproofs. Umbrellas are useless in 30 mph gusts.
  • Two full changes of clothes per girl per day out; three on the beach day.

One outing a day, and the drive home is the nap

This is the rule the whole plan is built on: leave the cottage 09:15–09:45, be at the destination by 10:15, eat at 11:45, and be moving in the car by 12:30. Both girls sleep the drive home and you are back by 13:30 with the afternoon free. It turns a 50-minute drive from a cost into an asset. Corollary: never two drives over 20 minutes in one day, and nothing starting after 14:30 more than 20 minutes away.

Denbighshire describe the short riverside trail as fully accessible — tarmac and boardwalk along the River Alyn, fine for a double buggy, and the river is the bit toddlers actually care about. Toilets with baby change at the start. Rain probability is 29% at 16:00 falling to 4% by 19:00, and the car park is open until 21:00.

This is the answer to "can we do Snowdonia?" — no, but you don't need to. Llyn Brenig gives you 2,500 acres of forest, moorland and water, a proper café with lake views, an adventure playground, an osprey exhibition, flat lakeside path and picnic tables. Total cost for all six of you: £6. Compare Llanberis at three-plus hours of driving and £6–£12 to park.

Autumn hours, verified: site 08:00–17:00, gates close 16:45; Caffi Brenig 08:00–16:00, hot food to 15:00. Mid-September is peak parking season — all day £6, one hour £1; the £2 rate the guides quote is the November–March one. Don't attempt the waymarked trails: the "short" one is still several km.

Too wet for the moors? Loggerheads instead — 12 minutes, £1.80, accessible riverside, and a café and toilets to retreat into. It's the best bad-weather-outdoors site you have.

Moel Findeg, or blackberries in the lane both free

Moel Findeg is a 56-acre nature reserve with conservation grazing ponies and, from the top — the Bishop's Chair — some of the finest views in Denbighshire. Narrow winding paths, so it's a carrier job rather than a buggy one.

Or don't drive at all. Mid-September is peak blackberry and early conker season in the hedges outside the door. One plastic tub from the kitchen, pick above knee height and away from the road edge, blackberries only — the same hedges carry black bryony and woody nightshade, which a three-year-old cannot tell apart. Tomorrow's crumble is then a cottage activity that costs a bag of flour.

Huge flat firm sand, gentle shelving, and a car-to-sand walk of only a few minutes — no long buggy slog. Low water is 10:07, so arriving at 10:00 puts you on miles of firm sand with the lighthouse walkable, and the wind is offshore so the sea will be flat. Play until about 12:40 and be off the low sand before the tide pushes back toward its 15:59 high.

Two real cautions. The incoming tide spreads fast around sandbanks and fills gullies — this is a watch-them-closely beach, with no lifeguard. And the main beach-front car park has form for tidal flooding (20 cars submerged in 2016); use Gamfa Wen if in doubt. Buggies sink in soft sand: stay on the firm wet stuff, and bring baby powder — it gets wet sand off toddler skin far better than a towel.

If Friday turns: Rhyl keeps usable sand at every tide state and is 10 minutes closer, so you're not committed to a window. Or go inland to Loggerheads and move the beach to Saturday morning — but you'd be giving up the best beach conditions of the week.

Jumu'ah at Chester Blacon, not Wrexham

Friday asks to be both the beach day and the Jumu'ah day, in opposite directions. Chester Shah Jalal Jame Masjid, 23–25 Clifton Drive, Blacon resolves it: Jumu'ah at 13:35, and Blacon sits on the north-west edge of Chester, so you reach it before the city traffic — about 20 minutes closer to Talacre than Wrexham is. It's a Bangladeshi-heritage mosque. Home from there is roughly 40 minutes.

If you want one meal out all week, make it a takeaway eaten at the cottage — with two toddlers that genuinely beats a restaurant, because they sit in their own chairs and nobody is watching the clock. Fish and chips from Mold is about £38 for the group. Battered fish is the usual fallback here; Welsh chippies almost universally fry in vegetable oil rather than beef dripping, but ask if it matters to you.

Cadw Open Doors: Erddig and Chirk are free today worth ≈ £150 of admission

Saturday 19 September is Open Doors. Erddig and Chirk Castle are both free, 10:00–17:00, no booking. Normally £19 an adult — £76 for your four at each.

Heading south or west (A5, Midlands): take Erddig, 30 minutes. It's the better of the two for this age group — 1,200 acres of level parkland, wide flat paths, a walled garden, and the car park is free anyway. Skip the house; it's stairs and ropes. Ninety minutes, then go.

Heading east via the M56: both are backwards. Take Mold street market instead — 12 minutes, free, on your route, 70+ stalls, and it stocks the car with food for the drive.

Chirk is 45 minutes with a steep hill, though there is a free minibus. Erddig is closer, flatter and easier with buggies. And whatever you do, the girls will nap on the drive home — so a stop that ends at 12:00 is worth more than a bigger one ending at 14:00.

Wet departure: skip it entirely and drive. You'll have had four good days; don't spend the last one being cold in a car park.

That's not frugality talking, it's arithmetic. Tŷ Mawr gives you sheep, pigs, goats, ducks and two llamas for £1 of parking. Loggerheads gives the best accessible riverside walk in range for £1.80. Chester Zoo gives you a half-day for £165.88. For a 2- and 3-year-old, the cheap ones are genuinely better.

Never buy a family ticket. Not once.

A family ticket prices in two children. Your children are mostly free. Every single time, four adult tickets beat it:

Buy nothing. The one genuine windfall needs no purchase at all — Open Doors on Saturday the 19th.

The trap is the machine, not the tariff

Tariffs here are trivial. Payment methods are not.

  • Coins only, no change: both Talacre car parks, Wepre, Nant Mill, Tŷ Mawr, Alyn Waters Llay side — which is the side with the playground.
  • Card only, no cash: Coed Moel Famau, which runs ANPR and bills at a barrier.
  • No mobile signal at all at Bwlch Penbarras and Moel Famau — sort payment before you lose reception.

Carry £15 in £1 coins and a contactless card, and install PayByPhone and JustPark before you leave home.

The biggest saving isn't an attraction

A café lunch for six is £45–£70. A supermarket picnic for the same six is £12–£18. Over three full days that gap is £100–£150 — larger than any admission decision on this page, and larger than Chester Zoo.

It compounds here, because the doorstep has no halal provision at all and nothing delivers to . So "we'll just eat out tonight" means a 30-minute drive to Wrexham. One halal grocery shop on Wednesday removes the problem for the whole week.

Stated plainly: there is no mosque, prayer room, halal butcher or halal restaurant within the 20-minute radius. The three village pubs all serve conventional British pub food. Wrexham (30 min) and Chester (40 min) are the two real hubs, and Wednesday's indoor day takes you to one of them anyway.

These shape the day rather than constrain it. Dhuhr at 13:08 lands exactly in the nap window — which is convenient, because under this plan you are either driving home or just back. Maghrib around 19:20–19:30 is roughly toddler bedtime, so being back at the cottage by then falls out of the plan naturally.

  • Wrexham Islamic Cultural Centre — Jumu'ah 13:30, iqāmah 13:50, ~30 min. Prayer facilities for men and women, accessible entrance and car park. Their domain doesn't resolve, so confirm at the door or by phone.
  • On Friday, Chester is the right choice only because you're coming from Talacre. On any other day Wrexham is nearer.

  • Safar Bistro Grill, Wrexham — the strongest halal family option in range. Mediterranean fusion, opens 09:00, which fits the pre-nap window far better than a 6pm dinner. Hygiene 5. Budget £10–£18 a main. It does serve alcohol. — no website, confirm first
  • Pepe's Piri Piri, Wrexham — grilled chicken, rice, chips, wraps: the most toddler-proof halal menu around, and cheap enough not to hurt when half ends up on the floor.
  • Mold has two kebab shops on Wrexham Street, but neither could be verified as certified halal — ring and ask rather than assume.
  • Fish and chips is the reliable fallback everywhere; Welsh chippies fry in vegetable oil almost universally.

Supermarkets and the late shop

  • Tesco Mold, — reported 24 hours Tue–Fri. With a two-year-old that is the single most useful logistics fact of the week. Verify on arrival.
  • Aldi, King St — Mon–Sat 08:00–21:00
  • Lidl, Denbigh Rd — Mon–Sat 08:00–20:00
  • Home Bargains, Chester Rd — cheapest for nappies, wipes, snacks and rainy-day craft bits

The things you only want to look up once

Medical — put these in the sat-nav now

  • Minor injuries first, not A&E. Mold Community Hospital MIU, Ash Grove, Mold — 13 min. Mon–Sat 08:00–18:00, closed Sunday. X-ray Mon–Fri 09:00–16:00.
    Ring before you drive: many MIUs have a minimum age and will send under-5s to a full A&E. This one's age policy is not published.
  • A&E: Wrexham Maelor, Croesnewydd Rd — 26 min, 24/7, and it has paediatric inpatient care, which is why it beats the nearer alternatives for the girls. Free parking.
  • Countess of Chester 31 min (English hospital — charges for parking). Glan Clwyd 40 min.
  • NHS 111 Wales — free, 24/7, and in Wales it also covers GP out-of-hours. Prescriptions in Wales are free for everyone.
  • Boots, Mold High St — Mon–Sat 09:00–17:30, closed Sunday. Nothing is open after 17:30, so bring your own Calpol, Piriton, plasters and thermometer.

Driving these lanes after dark

  • Sheep are on the lane, not beside it, and they lie on the tarmac at night for warmth. They do not move for headlights. Drive the last two miles at a speed where you could stop for a black sheep on black road.
  • No street lighting anywhere — Eryrys, Maeshafn, every connecting lane, and the cottage driveway. Bring real torches, not phone torches, and keep one in the car.
  • No pavements. Walk facing traffic, girls in the buggy or holding hands, something high-vis after 18:30.
  • Working farmland at silage time: tractors and tankers use these lanes at all hours and will not reverse for you. Verges are soft after rain.
  • Hedge-cutting season leaves thorn cuttings on the road. Check you have a spare or a tyre kit, and that you know where the locking wheel nut is — before you set off.
  • Old lead-mine workings and disused quarries surround the village. Stay on lanes and waymarked paths, off the spoil heaps.

Does it all fit in one car?

Four adults plus two toddler car seats does not fit a five-seat car. Worth settling before you go, because it changes real numbers.

  • Two cars: every parking figure on this page doubles (budget £25–£40, not £10–£20), both drivers need the coordinates, and you'll want an agreed meeting point on the lanes — Llanarmon-yn-Iâl community shop, 9 minutes out, is the obvious one. The upside: Friday's Jumu'ah split becomes easy.
  • One seven-seater: check it still has boot space with row three up. A week's shopping for six plus a buggy is a lot.
  • Whoever isn't driving should sit in the back between the girls on anything over 30 minutes. That rescues more journeys than any snack.

Buggy or carrier? Bring both

A double buggy is the wrong default here. Roughly half the good sites defeat one.

  • A single buggy plus a carrier for the two-year-old is the unlock — it's what lets you say yes to Moel Findeg, the Leete Path and a short climb from Bwlch Penbarras instead of ruling all of them out. The three-year-old can walk most of what's planned.
  • Buggy-perfect: Loggerheads riverside, Llyn Brenig lakeside, Tŷ Mawr's tarmac loop, Erddig parkland, Tŷ Pawb.
  • At Talacre neither is ideal on soft sand — park close and stay on the firm wet sand, which is exactly what the 08:30–13:00 low-water window gives you.

Nine hours of rain and no drying plan

  • Ask the host before you travel: washing machine? dryer or heated airer? can the heating be turned on? A September booking at 331 m may have it off by default.
  • If there's no dryer, you need two pairs of waterproof trousers per child, plus wellies and trainers each so one pair dries overnight.
  • A £10 clothes airer from Home Bargains on the way in is cheaper than one launderette load — and the nearest launderette is a 28–35 minute drive.
  • One bin bag for the wet pile keeps the car seats dry coming home from the beach.

Also true, and quietly useful

  • Mobile Post Office stops in Eryrys at Canolfan Dewi Sant, Wednesdays 16:00–16:30 — cash without a drive.
  • Mold street market Wednesdays and Saturdays, 09:00–15:30, 70+ traders. Fresh fruit and veg genuinely cheaper than the supermarket.
  • It's term time, so everywhere is quiet — but many places switch to reduced or weekend-only hours from 1 September. That's what most of the ringing-ahead on this page is for.
  • Mold Food & Drink Festival runs Fri 18–Sun 20 Sept. Friday is £20 for over-18s (under-16s free with an adult). It clashes with your beach day and it isn't cheap — noted so you can decide, not recommended.
  • The Clwydian Range has Dark Sky status, but astronomical darkness doesn't arrive until ~21:00 and both girls will be asleep. Ruling it out deliberately rather than forgetting it.
